BP has taken full responsibility for the ecological catastrophe in the U.S.
The British oil company BP pleaded “absolutely liable” for the diversion of oil from offshore fields in the Gulf of Mexico and promised to assume all costs for the elimination of oil stains and damages. It is reported by BBC News.
CEO Tony Hayward said the company is ready for the worst-case scenario, where the diversion will have to fight for two or three months. He added that the company has already developed the technology with which to collect spilled oil from the water. The space around the well in the coming days to be covered by a special dome with a diameter of a mile.
According to Reuters, analysts estimate the potential costs of responding to the accident in amounts ranging from 1.1 to 14 billion dollars.
Earlier, U.S. President Barack Obama called the oil spill “ecological catastrophe”. According to him, the responsibility for what happened should be BP.
Leaking oil in the Gulf of Mexico began after the April 20 exploded and sank oil platform Deepwater Horizon, owned by BP. April 29 in Louisiana was declared a state of emergency, but a day later on the same measures went the governors of Florida and Alabama.
Oil slick formed on the spot emergency continues to grow. According to preliminary data, daily water reaches about 760 thousand liters of oil. Spot area exceeded 12,000 square kilometers.
