A new cause of facial aging

American scientists have found that the outward manifestations of aging depends primarily not on the reduction of skin tone and soft tissues, fixed in modern plastic surgery, but by changing the shape of facial bones, particularly the lower jaw, reports PhysOrg.
Plastic surgeons from the University of Rochester analyzed the 120 completed on medical CT scan faces of people of different ages. To study were selected from 20 images of men and women from three age groups: from 20 to 36 years, from 41 to 64 years and older than 64 years.
With the help of computer programs, scientists measured the length, width and angle of the mandible on each image and compared the results of measurements in different groups.
Data analysis showed that age significantly increases the angle of the mandible, because of what is lost perfection of the lower boundary of the face. In addition, representatives of the younger groups the length of the mandible was significantly greater than in middle and older groups, and its height in the middle and old age has changed slightly.
As explained by the Head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University Clinic Lengstayn Howard (Howard Langstein), because the lower jaw is the basis of the relevant part of the person, any of its changes affect the general appearance of the person.
In particular, according to Lengstayna, age-related decline in bone that leads to sagging fastening her soft tissues. Outwardly, it appears that the lower part of the face becomes softer oval shape, reduced skin tone of the cheeks, chin and neck, leaving the outlines of a person acquiring a characteristic appearance.

These results open the way for the development of more effective plastic surgery, which will include a patch form of the mandible before the tightening of soft tissues.
