Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev announced the President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili’s persona non grata. This RIA Novosti reported with reference to the statement that the head of state made on Wednesday, February 17, at a joint news conference with Abkhaz President Sergei Bagapsh.
Medvedev stressed that in the future Russia will resume full relations with Georgia. “There is no other way , but with the current president of Georgia, I personally will not have any business ” – said Russia’s president.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were severed in the summer of 2008 after the war in South Ossetia. According to Dmitry Medvedev, the responsibility for this armed conflict is the regime of Mikhail Saakashvili. In late August 2008 the President of Russia signed decrees recognizing the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
During the press conference, Medvedev reminded that Russia and Georgia and Russia-Abkhaz relations centuries-old history. “We have always felt and I am sure we will experience the most friendly feelings towards the Georgian people,” – said the president. He is convinced that even the armed conflict that occurred in 2008, will not spoil the relationship.
The Georgian authorities still regard South Ossetia and Abkhazia of its territory which was occupied by Russia troops. Besides Russia recognized the independence of these republics, only a few countries – Nicaragua, Venezuela and the Republic of Nauru, located on a coral island in the western Pacific Ocean.
