Obama sent a warning to Pakistan

The Washington Post reported that in November, Barack Obama sent a letter to the President of Pakistan, in which he set forth his views on the prospects of relations between the two countries.

The head of the U.S. administration promised to increase aid for trade and development, including military construction, to strengthen cooperation between intelligence agencies and to curtail public criticism of the Pakistani authorities. However, according to the newspaper, Obama “with unusual candor” warned the Pakistani authorities about the inadmissibility of their support for the banned extremist groups for political purposes.

As the Washington Post, while the main attention is focused on U.S. plans to send reinforcements to Afghanistan, the focus of the White House focused on the situation in Pakistan.

Obama advisers have concluded that the efforts of the coalition in Afghanistan are doomed to fail without the active cooperation with Pakistan, and that the failure of the Pakistani authorities to reflect the threat of war in the country would entail more serious consequences than any defeat in Afghanistan.

The newspaper quoted an unnamed administration official responsible for the fact that the U.S. relationship with Pakistan “should be developed in a new direction.”

On Sunday, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown urged Pakistani leaders to take decisive action against al-Qaeda militants operating on their territory. On Monday, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said that Brown’s appeal was made “not at”, because Pakistan has suffered in the war on terrorism more losses than the NATO forces in Afghanistan.
